Take an Active Role in Your Child's HomeschoolingIf you intend to homeschool, to be successful you must exercise discipline. You have to grasp the idea that while you are at home with your children, this is also school time. Your home is their classroom and you must follow a schedule to be effective. You can’t be spending your time on the telephone or visiting with your friends during class. The same goes for shopping. There is a time and place for everything, especially homeschooling. Don’t mix your needs with those of your children’s needs for an education. Illnesses and family emergencies are the only events that should be considered as a legitimate interruption of your children’s homeschool education. Resist the urge to fill time by giving your children “homework” or other assignments while you while you attend to personal items. Ignoring this rule can be a serious detriment to your child’s ability to get a better education. Every homeschooler should be cognizant of the public and private school systems and establish them as standards against which to measure their own progress. Your goal should never be parity. Instead you should be seeking to exceed every level of their scholastic achievement. One of the basic, fundamental rules of teaching is to have a teacher present in the classroom at all times. Remember when you were still in school? A teacher was present in the classroom at all times to maintain discipline and to help any students needing attention. You can be sure that during regular class work, testing, study hall, and other self directed assignments not requiring instruction a teacher would always be available. A truism of education is that children learn by example. However, remember that they learn from both good and bad examples. If you assign them some work, for whatever reason, and then go off and leave them without help or supervision you are effectively sending them a signal that their education is not necessarily the most important thing on your mind. They can carry this negative lesson with them for life. Try the alternate, during your regular school hours and instruction; always be available for them whenever they need help and assistance. A little touch of reality might help here. You chose homeschooling for your children and with this choice should have come the realization that you would be the teacher. Even, be a better teacher. Generally speaking, children don’t learn all they should in the public school system. Not necessarily because they don’t want to but often because they are allowed to do whatever they want while in the classroom. They are allowed to slough off in class, skip homework assignments, cut classes, take unexcused absences, and generally behave in a boorish manner without being corrected or disciplined. Your job as teacher is to set the bar a much higher standard. Your children will have to be responsible for their own behavior. They can’t sleep in, be late for breakfast, or be late for class. By the same token, you can’t sleep in, you can’t be late for breakfast, and you have to begin school on time. You can’t cut class to run errands or decide to vacuum the house. Setting that good example and showing your children that their education is serious business should be your number one concern. You should also adhere to this principle. Children learn by example, in subtle ways that are not always within our control. If you assign your children work and leave to go do other things you are sending a message to them that the schooling is not of a highest priority for you. Even if they cannot articulate it, this negative message in terms of your priorities will affect the children's attitude towards their education. By always “showing up” for class on time will help your children to realize the importance of their education, and make them understand that their education is more than just something to fill time for them as you attend to more urgent activities.
